Welcome to the DHR, one of the most renowned and respected little railways in the World, now the world’s one of the oldest surviving little railway. It is not just a railway, but a complete system and community.

The most special aspect of the DHR is the irrepressible pioneering spirit of the people who are behind it. The railway is special to them and we hope will be special for you too.

The story of DHR is indeed a remarkable history lesson in survival and today it is recognized as a heritage site of world importance, reflecting the creative genius of the original engineers, along with the technical, economic and the social development of the railway. The railway ran for the first on 23rd August 1880 from Siliguri Jn to Kurseong, was at one time the backbone of connectivity of Darjeeling to the rest of the World. It is the first world heritage site in Bengal and first industrial world heritage site in Asia.

We bring you, steam plus dream rail, a ride replete with history along with all modern services to enamour you with an experience of train travel considered by many as one of the best train rides in the World.

Relax in the hospitality of our trained team as we take you in the luxuriously refurbished compartments and dining car – TENZING NORGAY pulled by the vintage class steam engine through the beautiful forests of the Terai, huffing and puffing up the Himalayas. The life time experience starts in the evening from Siliguri Jn, takes you through the passage of history and brings you back with fond memories of the journey spent in the luxurious comfort.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 01 Arrival at Siliguri. After lunch, visit Siliguri Jn loco shed to see the famous “B” – Class locomotives that have run the DHR for over a 100 years now. Overnight at Siliguri

Day 02 A free day. Take a car up to Kalimpong. Find the ruins of old DHR track to Kalimpong at Reyang village on the way. Come back to Siliguri by 4:00PM. At 5:00PM assemble for the legendary dining charter train. A superb three course meal being served on train as the steam engine blasts up through
 
Hill  

Day 03 Charter train will leave for the journey from Siliguri Jn up through the forest to Tindharia. Visit the DHR workshop before returning to Siliguri. There will be ample opportunity for photography – transport (preferably bus) will be available on the parallel road for the photographers. It is possible to change between bus and train frequently. Over night at Siliguri.
 

Day 04 The second charter will run from Tindharia to Darjeleing with a break at Kurseong for lunch. After Kurseong stop at the famous Batasia Loop to photograph the train with Kanchunjungha at the background. As usual bus will accompany the train for photographers. Reach Darjeeling by evening, home for the next two days. Overnight Darjeeling.

Day 05 Morning/Afternoon excursion on the joy train from Darjeeling to Ghoom (To visit the excellent DHR museum). This gives another chance to photograph the train at Batasia with the mountains. Over night at Darjeeling.

Day 06 Local tour of Tiger Hill Observatory, Tibetan Refugee Centre, Tea Gardens, Himalayan mountaineering Institute, Zoo, Bazar. Over night at Darjeeling.

Day 07 Board the down diesel hauled normal passenger train back to Siliguri. Transportation will be made available from NJP / Siliguri Jn and back to hotel at Siliguri for the night. Overnight at Siliguri.

Day 08 A free day in Siliguri. Optional choice – ride the meter guage slow train down to Aluabari Road. It runs parallel to the old abandoned Kishangunj route for the DHR. This trains are loads of fun with many local people on board. Return back to Siliguri. Overnight at Siliguri.

Day 09 Train/flight for your onward journey.

DHR Photo Charter
Relax in the hospitality of our trained team as we take you in the luxuriously refurbished compartments and dining car – TENZING NORGAY pulled by the vintage class steam engine through the beautiful forests of the Terai, huffing and puffing up the Himalayas. You can visit the DHR workshop at Tindharia with prior permission. There will be ample opportunity for photography – transport (preferably bus) will be available on the parallel road for the photographers. It is possible to change between bus and train frequently.

DHR Train Chase
Even if are not having a charter train, you can always chase the normal 1D daily service or the Saturday and Sunday Special Joy ride Train to Gayabari and back. There will be ample opportunity for photography – transport (preferably bus) will be available on the parallel road for the photographers starting from NJP/Siliguri Jn pasing through the busy bazaar area and the through the terai forests started climbing up the Himalayas. You can visit the DHR workshop at Tindharia with prior permission.

Explore Teesta Valley
Take a car up to Kalimpong, find the ruins of old DHR track to Kalimpong at Reyang village on the way, also explore the location of old stations. Have lunch at Kalimpong. Take a walk in the colourful market of Kalimpong and by evening drive back to Siliguri.
